A wish is a compass that only points away from where you're standing.
· by Roy Edlund

As I lay in bed this morning, I was thanking my wife for marrying me and sticking around all these years. A common conversation we have.
Then at some point I apologized that I haven't made her life easier, as we've struggled our entire marriage to get a solid footing financially. Also something I do often.
In the murky reaches of my brain, in this pre-awake state, I had this insight that I've been wishing for a better life, for the entirety of it.
Always wishing life was fair or I was smarter.
Always focused on some point at "not here, not yet."
And that brought out another insight, the longer you do it, the more it trains your eye to look past whatever you're actually standing in.
You can wish so long for a better life that you sleep through the one that showed up.
I got up and started my day.
