Didn’t Make the Cut: It Needed More Room
· by Roy Edlund
Another from my "didn't make the cut" series. 🙂
This one sat in the keeper pile until the very last day.
I love it.
A clean emerald wave crashing offshore, all that wet sand and tidal pool stretched out calm in front of it.
In this image the wave is the subject, but it’s a small subject in a big, quiet frame, and that’s the whole trouble.
At calendar size, all that lovely empty foreground just reads as empty. Your eye skates across it and lands nowhere.
Blow it up on a big canvas, though, and the emptiness turns into room, you can stand in front of it, let your eye wander out to the wave, and melt into the whole thing.
Some photos need to be big before they work and this is one of them.
A page in my calendar couldn’t give it the space it needed.
So I left it out, and started picturing it four feet wide instead.
Love from here. ❤️
Prints of the photos in this post are available in the Beach Bum Gallery on paper, canvas and metal.
