Rodanthe Pier Sunrise
· by Roy Edlund

When we moved here back in 2012, we owned a Geo Tracker that we called George. It had seen its better days long before I owned it, but to me it was the best beach bum jalopy.
I loved tooling down the beach road at 30mph annoying anyone unlucky enough to be behind me. In the cool of the morning before the sunrise, I would often rarely exceed 20mph.
I mostly spent my days cruising between Kitty Hawk and Jennette's Pier.
I had heard plenty of stories from surfers about the southern beaches on Hatteras Island and knew one day I'd have to take that drive.
Well, the opportunity arose when I was told about a surf contest at the lighthouse in Buxton. So, top down my two sons and I headed south on 12 across the old Bonner Bridge and Pea Island.
Somewhere between Bonner and S Turns, a dark cloud appeared and dropped what seemed like an inch of rain on us. We were drenched. Luckily the the sun was out to the south and we were dried out before we got to Buxton.
Along the way, I stopped at the Rodanthe Pier for sunrise and captured this image.
I loved that little Geo. ❤️
