Seaoats Sunrise
· by Roy Edlund

I'm not sure when my love for seaoats started. I don't remember noticing them before moving to the OBX.
When I first moved here I spent days wandering the dunes, with my camera, south of Coquina Beach, then down on Pea Island and on to Salvo.
I just loved standing among the seaoats, the sound the wind made when blowing through them was so comforting. I began talking to them, gently rubbing them, sitting silently in their midst.
I loved taking photos of them.
Some interesting factoids, sea oats are not actually oats. Their Latin name is Uniola paniculata, which means the one with panicles. So, I of course needed to know what a panicle was. The cluster of seeds are called panicles.
We named the panicle after the grass, and then named the grass after the panicle.
Well, it was interesting to me and probably the botanist that named it.
Love from here. ❤️
