Secrets

Looking at this photo, I was struck by the calm and its hidden secret.
That wide, glassy surface running all the way to the horizon. It reads as open. Nothing to hide. You feel like you can see the whole ocean.
But of course you can't see any of it.
That calm surface is exactly the thing that keeps the depth out of view.
Two pelicans gliding together through life across the deep , close enough to touch their own reflections.
From up there it all looks like one smooth surface they share.
The ocean surface hides what's going on in the depths, until it can't contain the secret any longer and breaks along the shoreline.
It can't be taken back.
The oceans secret, right there.
Calm and unreadable for as long as the water stays deep, and then is revealed at the edge whether anyone meant it to or not.
Came out by accident.
The wave never means to.
